Contribute to our Cookbook

  • Californians have been eating -- and, therefore, cooking -- for thousands of years. In that time,
millions of native Californians together with millions of immigrants have created one of the
richest culinary histories on the planet. And if you cook and eat in California, you're part of it.

Within the next two years, Take Back Red California will compile, write and publish a cookbook
like no other -- a book that pays tribute to the history of food in California, from the Klamath to
the Rio Grande and the Sierra to the sea. We want to represent as many cuisines, as many
contributions, and as many stories as we can fit between two covers. In the process, we'll go far beyond traditional "California cookbook" territory, the big cities and the thin ribbon of the coast.

We want to tell the story of cooking in the whole state, which has never been done before, as far as we know.

We're off to a great start. We've done our groundwork in California's history, enlisted the help of
a history professor and several other people, and actually excited the interest of a respected
publisher. Now all we need is the material... and that means we'll be talking to you. If you have
stories of how your ancestors came to California and what they did when they got here, together with treasured family recipes and photos, PLEASE contact Mayme Hubert at
maymehubert@att.net or Kip Crosby at panterazero@gmail.com. We’d like to discuss what you
can contribute, and we’d like to do it soon.
