Community Forum: Future of Social Security, Medicare/Medicaid [MediCal]
Who: California Alliance for Retired Americans Fresno CAT ;Resources for Independent Living Central Valley, Fresno, Madera, Tulare, King Counties Central Labor Council, California Nurses Association; Communication Workers of America Retirees; IAMAW Local 653, and other community organizations.
What: Seniors, workers, and people with disabilities will participate in a Community Forum regarding the Future of Medicare/Medicaid (MediCal) and Social Security. Congrressmembers Costa, Denham and Nunes have been invited.
When: Tuesday, November 1st at 1pm – 3pm
Where: IAMAW Local 653, 544 W. Olive Ave., Fresno, CA 93728
Why: Some in Washington, including a new federal commission on deficit reduction, have suggested either cutting Social Security benefits or raising the retirement age as a way to “fix” the deficit, CARA, and its many affiliates and sponsors, are working to help Americans get the whole truth. Social Security has enough money to cover full benefits for 30 years, and has not contributed one cent to the nation’s budget problems. It is one of America’s greatest success stories, but has recently been maligned in the public debate.
Social Security is far from bankrupt, with a $2.6 billion dollar surplus. The federal government has borrowed most of that to pay for wars, the Wall Street bank bailouts, and the Bush-era tax cuts for the wealthy. But the government has to pay back the loan – it’s not their money – it belongs to American workers. It’s a promise that can’t be broken and more than ever, American’s count on their Social Security to get by.
